Baroque Lutes

J.C. Hoffmann 1730

This lute was constructed using David Van Edwards course Build Your Own Baroque Lute!
It offered me the initiation into the baroque lute. I received many comments and criticisms about this initial attempt. Subsequently, I rebuilt the top with new barring and re-spaced the strings at the bridge to customize it. I have been told, success is measured in one tenth of a millimeter, in regard to thickness of the top and bars and their placement. Reworking this lute was very informative and allowed me the opportunity to try different arrangements. Anthony Harvey, a student of Richard Stone's dropped by and was  captivated by it's improved tone and took it with him.

Sebastian Schelle 1721

This lute was constructed using the body of the MIR 902 Schelle currently in Nuremburg. The original is in macassar ebony with ivory spacers and a swan neck peg box. I wanted to build this lute with a Jauck style extension. I used the striped bowl design from the Yale Schelle along with the end cap design.
